The Puppini Sisters
Shepherd Bush Empire
3rd October 2007

Heres one for the gals! Just as the Back to the Future made us want to swing dance to Johnny B. Goode and Casablanca made us believe in love, The Puppini Sisters will make you want to dig out all your Benefit Cosmetics, doll yourself up flapper girl style and go looking for vintage accessories at Portobello Road whilst humming Mr Sandman which they do a great rendition of.
Its nothing hugely original but I suppose it keeps swing alive. The Puppini Sisters deserve due credit for making an effort to bring their own genre of Vintage-Swing-Pop to the Bratz generation by covering Beyonces Crazy in Love- kudos girls, that really made me smile - and for managing to get rid of the whiny aspect to Kate Bush and making Wuthering Heights fun rather than just interesting. Shamelessly, they commit sacrilege with Heart of Glass and as for their Puppinifying Take Thats Could it be Magic - no it couldnt Im afraid.
The red-head, the brunette and the blonde that make up The Puppini Sisters each have their instrumental talents and add their personal touches to the rapport with their audience. The red-head plays skilfully plays electric violin and has a truly amazing voice that gave me chills during her solos. The spirited blonde is the comic of the group and the accordion playing Italian keeps things classic.
Their narrow range though delivered to perfection will send you into a sugar coma, maybe that should be a Canderel coma for all their artificial sweetness. But then, this is what an evening out with a close harmony group is supposed to be - completely glam, hugely theatrical and funny too. The Puppini Sisters have a comical stage presence and work the crowd well; true entertainers. You have to sit tight through the theatricals at the beginning and end from the pointless cockney host of the evening, a fishnet clad less attractive Nancy from Oliver Twist who may well have wondered over from the nearest gentlemens club. The up-tempo tunes are well worth a view of their myspace page if you dont want to buy the album which is good, but one wonders how many plays you could really get out of it unless maybe you own 50s themed diner.
Ive still not quite made up my mind about The Puppini Sisters, though theyre clearly talented, singers and musicians. There is clearly an audience for a female close harmony vocal group with a decent amount of instrumental talent between them and spectacular accompaniment. The jazz guitarist is impeccable and the drummer and the bassist utterly invaluable in this show but I think we ought to leave it to John Mayer, Harry Connick Jr and the like to sort us with some true jazz genius.
