The skills to pay the bills?
Yeah they still got 'em! This was the 5th time I had seen the Beasties stretching all the way back to 1995 at the Summersault festival in Sydney and they have never failed to impress. Not even the tube strike could dampen the crowds' spirits. As musicians there talents are diverse and they still have the energy required to rock the house party at the drop of a hat.
Heavy jazz funk instrumentals in keeping with their new album 'The Mix-Up' still kept the crowds a movin' but it was the old-school hip-hop classics like 'Body Movin', 'Sabotage', 'Intergalactic', 'The Skills to Pay the Bills' and an early hardcode number 'Egg raid on Mojo' that the capacity crowd had come to hear and expect. Dressed sharply in their Blues Brother attire they had the Academy rockin for almost two hours.
Mix Master Mike was right on form offering the crowd some awesome turntablism, I just wish it had been a bit longer.
Mike D was still the true beastie boy, jumping around like he was still 18 with Ad-Rock where as MCA was definitely more into the mellow funk tunes and looked a bit over their old rap tunes.
The sometimes fourth Beastie Boy Money Mark was still the rock 'n roll organist, and added the one man mosh pit onto the stage when his skills where not needed for that number, at one point staging diving over his organ. The finishing touch to the act was Alfredo Ortiz on percussion and drums who added another dimension to the sound.
I gotta say Mike D is still the ladies choice!
Hope to see them again soon!
