The Lion King
The Lyceum Theatre
24th May 2007
By Nick Howard
Extravaganza! Thats about the best way to sum up The Lion King. Its full of colour, energy, sound, dance and everything in between this is by far the best way to experience visual and aural ecstasy without taking banned substances; though possibly just as addictive...
We took our seats about 15 minutes before the show started, but the ushers showed efficient urgency to get everyone into their seats by 7:30pm (to the point that I was wondering the rush was). It didnt take long to find out, because as soon at the aisles were clear and the lights dimmed, it began.
All eyes were on the bongo players perched up in the boxes banging away when all of a sudden there was a rush from behind and shadows loomed over our heads. The shadows turned out to be a stampede of animals racing down the aisles giraffes with their necks fanning out over the stall seats, birds racing over our heads and all other types of puppet African beasts. It was frightening and exciting all at the same time.
The rest of the show was just as lively and extremely entertaining. We had a wonderful night and left the theatre singing, dancing and just generally full of joy. I would recommend anyone who hasnt seen the Lion King to go and see it an absolutely fantastic show!
Have you seen The Lion King? Did it make you roar with joy or run screaming through the aisles? Should Disney stick to the screen or should we see more of our childhood favourites on stage? Post your views and reviews in the comment section.
