The Reading Beer Festival

pint.jpgBy Nick Howard

Some believe the Reading Music Festival to be the best. Others believe the Reading Beer Festival however to be the best. Surely though if the two combined forces to become one festival, then the result certainly would be the best festival in the world!!!

I’m not sure how impressed Carling would be with that, but them aside, the Reading Beer Festival was nothing to do with mass produced beer and all about the good stuff, real beer!

We made our way out to the festival early to avoid the disappointment of either being turned away from the gate due to overcrowded-ness or simply turned away from our preferred beverages due to lack of stock. It didn’t help much though as when we arrived half an hour after the gates opened, the line to get in was already massive and when we got in we found that the previous two days had already witnessed a massive reduction in stocks.

Not one to let my spirits be dampened though, I proceeded to sample as many of the brews that I had previously marked in my “beer bible” as “worth trying” as I could. I did however find that most of the beers that I had marked (mostly the high percentage English beers) were already gone due to popularity. I therefore mostly spontaneously chose my beers and for the most part have no idea what I drunk other than they were good.

I’m proud to say though I didn’t drink too much and left before sundown. This is good because it means that the majority of the 430 beers on offer remain unexperienced by my tastebuds so there is more reason to go back next year and give it another go. I might even go a day early next year to avoid disappointment.

Other than the beer there was entertainment including skittles, raffles, Morris dancing, bands as well as a good selection of food for carnivores and vege’s alike. We had a nice spot on the grass and when the sun came out in the afternoon it was simply divine. You simply can’t beat getting drunk in the sun!!!

All in all the Reading Beer Festival was a great day and I will definitely be back next year.
