Cold War Kids ULU 1 May 2007
- By Joe Cohen
Coming into the ULU hall this crowd was clearly there for the music. The audience ranged in age from high school to alta cockers like myself who were into the band. Just before the Long Beach four took stage the poet Derrick Brown read two poems, which were suprisingly good, and the band immediately joined in and began their set. This was a clear indication that CWK are at the intersection of music and art.
The band is really all over the place and their energy literally explodes off the stage. This is engaging to watch and difficult to make sense of as a band. Creatively they seemed dominated by singer/songwriter Nathan Willet but I was immediately drawn to guitarist Jonnie Russell as two things were obvious about him: one, he has mad skills and two, he's trapped in a cage.
Musically the band is evocative of so many, notably The White Stripes, Credence Clearwater Revival, Jefferson Airplane, Rage Agains the Machine and The Cure. The Cure? I know but Russell's reverb-laden guitar is somewhere between Dick Dale, Mariachi and Robert Smith. CWK slammed headfirst through their set - not sure if blues, ballads or psychadelic thrash were the way to go. They made good work of their single "Hang Me Up To Dry" and "St John" but seemed to tumble through the rest of the material. To be honest, I think I need a few days to figure out what to make of this very talented band.
