Arsenal - Bolton

Typical sunny day in North London, Arsenal shirts and beer bellies everywhere. Perfect football watching weather. Quick pint – then walked to the ground, past the old Highbury, past the stalls selling dodgy Gunners t-shirts. Still no sign of the new stadium– over the railway bridge and there it is. Impressed, I was. And the concourse around makes it feel like a Spanish ground (except for all the beer bellies).

There was quite a lot riding on the game – the new Premiership honour of finishing 4th and being knocked out in the qualifying rounds of the Champions League. And it was also a clash of footballing styles – in which both teams lived up to their stereotype.

I thought I liked Bolton, I have a strange kind of respect for Fat Sam. But they were sh*te. How they are 5th is worrying. Anelka was class – every time he got the ball he was looking to score, and got boo-ed by the Arsenal fans. But the rest – Davies – Sunday League, Hunt – Sunday League, Diouf pantomine villain, and the rest forgettable.

They did score first, terrible Arsenal defending, Nolan nips round the back centres for Anelka. But after that nothing.

Arsenal have got a lot of very skilful young players, Fabregas the best but all pretty useful particulary Clichy, Rosisky and Adebayor. What they need is a bit of leadership on the pitch – but what would I know .

One other player stood out for Arsenal, Hleb. He had an absolute ‘mare. He looked like a trialist who had got on by mistake, every time he got the ball the Arsenal fans were waiting for him to c~ck up. And he always did. He kept looking towards the bench; either he was asking to come off or just expecting the inevitable (Julio Baptista 81).

And the Arsenal goals. Rosisky nips in and took the ball off ‘the hapless’ Hunt. The whole stadium (except Hunt) could see this was going to happen 10 seconds before it did. The Fabregas goal, apparently it was pretty good, but I was having a piss. Queuing for warm Fosters at half time. Why?
