So the number one funk sound in town returned to the Jazz cafe. Of course I'm talking about Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. We attended night number one of their three night Jazz Cafe residency and didnt leave dissapointed. It was a Friday night and the Jazz Cafe was packed, maybe a little too packed but I suspected before hand that the Dap Kings would pull a crowd. All the way from New York the Dap Kings are as tight a funk band as you'll see, they look the part, sound the part. They are the part! They opened up the show ploughing through some of their instrumental numbers before bringing in the sweet soul sister her self - Sharon Jones. Now Ms Jones is a performer that has to be witnessed, a true one of a kind. She belted her way through the hits on the first two Lps - "Dap Dippin" and "Naturally" as well as dropping some brand new tracks for the expectant crowd.
A two hour show that flowed nicely and provided top entertainment. My one critiscm (I'm allowed one right??) was that Ms Jones started the practice of pulling a dork from the front of the crowd and dancing with him which was funny at first but when she did it for the 8th of 9th time it became a bit stale and got in the way of the funk.
They only come here once a year so unfortunately pop pickers you now have a long wait.. but keep your eyes open - a night out with Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings is a great night out!
