Now it's obvious that the hype surrounding The Gossip has been unavoidable... - Beth Ditto is everywhere - she is asked her opinion about everything - man she even made it onto the front of the observer Food monthly! - there's no doubt they have made a splash and the sold out crowd at this gig paid testimony to that.
After the misery of the England Ireland game we trudged over to the venue and piled in. I didnt manage to get a ticket for this one in time so had the displeasure of dealing with some street scum outside which wasn't pleasant at all but got me in there...
It's good to see that the Astoria is still the same. mosh pit downstairs with upstairs banked terraces that resemble a third division football ground.
This one kicked off early - I dodged the support bands and the the gossip where soon on...
Now I have checked out the LP a few times, "Control" is an amazing single... definately one of the tunes of the year but have to admit for me, the LP is a bit samey - Ditto shines through out and they can play, but most tracks blend into one which doesnt make for extended plays round at my gaff..
I wanted to check them live to see if my opinion remained the same...
An eye catching entrance - Beth came on in a dustbin bag and looked VERY like Missy Elliot in the Rain video - classic.... - she soon ditched this a rocked an all over lycra catsuit... very tight.. very unneccessary....

Theres no question she's got a set of lungs on her and as she powered through their set she displayed this on many occasions... ..
But alas my fears were confirmed.. I think I saw crowd movement for two songs with most just dozing through the rest..
I do think the Gossip are a tight band with Beth on the point of going ALL WORLD any time soon but I just think they need a few more bangers in the set...... If their next album contains a few more then I reckon I'll go check them out again...
