LP Review: Kidz in the Hall: School was my Hustle - Rawkus Records

Ok.... so u can class me with the rest of the 30 something hip hop fans out there that moan about the state of Hip hop these days and yearn for the Golden Era when things were so different and the anticipation of LP's was so much greater....blah blah blah...... but you know what, this IS a point that has to be re-iterated, especially when records get released that you listen to and you find yourself drifting back to those good ole days.... well just for a little bit anyway.......

So let's look at some key factors in making a good Hip Hop LP.

1. The best LPs are made by hip hop Groups. Full stop. Not rappers with a bunch of different producers.

2. Two man Dj and MC groups are what started all this - they ruled the game! - the know longer exist. That's rubbish!

3. One producer producing a whole LP. Not a collection of the hot button pressers of the time. A constant sound that defines the making of a record.

4. Using Samples. Even samples you have heard before - but samples that work on a Hip Hop record.

5. No guests. One voice - a voice that keeps you interested from track one to the end.

6. 12 tracks maximum. No more. No filler. It's not needed.

7. A label that you look for. An endorsement from a label that you should trust, even without hearing of the artist your self.

8. Keeping it "school" - all 15 year old rappers and crooners dont even mention it.. - did they even go? Surely we all got into Hip Hop at school - why pretend we didnt?

Good news. Kidz in the Hall "School was my Hustle" ticks all these boxes.

The (latest) resurrection of Rawkus didnt really mean that much to me when I first read about it but the more I read I'm convinced that these guys are on the right path. Gettting a good release out there to show everyone that they meant business was crucial, they backed the right record here.

"School was my Hustle" is a great listen. Not too complicated, doesnt take too many listens to get into it, no hidden message - none of that. Just a simple. well produced Hip Hop record. Put it on on. nod ya head. turn it off. simple.

Seriously worth picking up, best LP I've heard since Lupe Fiasco and a real sleeper. Real shame they didnt make it over to do their free planned in store - they were hemmed in by the New York snow (only happens to Hip Hop groups!)... Buy this record and hopefully they will make it over here!

Don't just take my word for it - dont forget this is the web of course - here snippets here!
