Out of town: The Moulin Rouge

By Katie (from afar)

After a few days in Amsterdam the culture buff in me needed a real dose of theatre. The Red Light District and the jingly jangly bits may entertain some people - but Paris has more to offer (culturally). Which is why, during my search for European theatre gems, I found myself making a fly by trip to the city of lurve.

Everyone has at least heard of the Moulin Rouge right? At the very least they have seen Nicole Kidman in the big screen movie with the same name. The setting is a familiar one - we saw the gigantic illuminated windmill as we tottered down the nearby streets, avoiding dog Merde as we went.

Personally, I hated the movie but have heard rave reviews about the live performance. "It is cabaret of the highest degree" they preached. "It will break the bank but tweak the heart".

And it did.

The French charmers at the main entrance swept us off our feet before they even hit the red carpet. Ooooh la la la la la... those lads sure know how to turn on the charm. I felt like the Queen (or at least Nicole Kidman) as they escorted us to our seats. Obviously nothing is done in halves, or even quarters for that matter. The red jackets, sweeping gestures, warm welcome and elaborate red interior all add to the grand atmosphere. I have seen a lot of West End shows but never before have I felt the sharp jab of excitement and anticipation I felt on Sunday. The free bottle of champas poured by French gods didn't go astray either.

As the lights turned low and music burst through the theatre my eyes spun with the explosion of feathers and glitz. The next few hours flew by in a blur of colour, exotic costumes, stunning French song and dance and enough sets of perfect breasts to put Amsterdam to shame. No jiggly bits in Paris I tell you.

Porn however, didn`t come into the equasion. The level of choreography and artistic genius went above and beyond that. The dancers were works of perfectly toned art... and the miniature ponies added to the fun. I won`t go into specifics but have to say that this is one experience you simply must have.

Sure, it`ll cost you (as will the champas fuelled raid of the gift shop... perfume smells so good when you`re frazzled) but it`ll be worth every single euro. After all, in a city full of Merde, it`s not often you get the chance to feel like royalty.

As for the way it'll make you critique the next `set` you come across... we`ll, we can`t all be born gifted.
