Ice skating at the Tower of London

I didn't want to go... I'm not even going to pretend. I hate outdoor ice skating (bah humbug!) and beautiful city surrounding or not, the thought of a cold nose, colder hands and cold uncomfortable feet is not my idea of fun. A big weekend of high heels and way too many dance floors didn't help matters.
So, when the lad booked tickets for an outdoor ice session at the new rink at the Tower of London he knew not to waste money on me. The last time I skated was at Kew Gardens and I ended up butt first in an ice-cold puddle. No, make that an ice rink LAKE. There were tears I tell you - TEARS.
But, my little Aussie sister in town which means I am in full 'hostess' mode and have been assigned 'official' photographer for the next month of adventures. So, I went along with a little red nose and frosty mood to cheer on the brave (crazy?!) sods on the ice.
To their credit, the organisers have done a great job and no one can deny the stunning backdrop of the Tower of London and the Thames bathed in light. My mood was kept at bay with hot coffee in the cafe/viewing area and if I'd been hangover-less I would have tucked into the mulled wine and hot liquor mixes on offer. The sis and the lad stumbled about amongst the rest of the uncoordinated sods while a few 'talented' guys whizzed about wreaking havoc on the innocent. I swear, there's always a couple... I swear, most accidents happen because people are scared to their knees by show-offs. Had to laugh when a staff member discreetly hip and shouldered one guy to the floor. I'm sure there's some type of staff etiquette rule about that...
The lack of decent (and loud) music was the one major drawback. It's hard to stir up ice moves to Christmas Carols. But, every single person out there came in flushed with laughter... if you don't mind the cold; it's obviously a top night out. £10 for an hour beats the gym I guess. That said, I'd pay £20 to see a Beef Eater lace up.
