Seu Jorge - The Roundhouse

I bought tickets for this show several months ago based on Giles Petersn's "Back in Brazil" which included Jorge's "Eu Sou Favela." After I listened to some of Jorge's other works and James reminded me he did the Bowie covers in "The Life Aquatic" I got really excited.

Jorge exceeded these hightened expectations, but first the venue. I had not been to the Roundhouse since its renovation and I can only say they crushed it. This may now be the top London venue in the 2-3K capacity (Brixton is 4k and not comparable to any venue anywhere). It is stylish, well-appointed, has loads of bars and the sound is just fantastic. Add to all that the staff there actually have language capacity! It's a winner so go check it out if you haven't yet.

I've been to a lot of shows lately and had begun to worry that live music was becoming the provenance of boys. I've seen fewer and fewer woman out at shows and I have taken to counting during concerts. Another trend bucked by Mr Jorge. The ladies were out in force and shake it they did. My lady did her own version of shaking which being 6.5 months pregnant means sitting on the floor and trying to keep some kind fo time. She's a total trooper and got right into the show.

Giles Peterson came out at 8:30 and spun some records for 30 minutes then announced how excited he was to have a Gooners win and Seu Jorge in the same day. Jorge and band then played a 45 minute set that ranged from Afro-Caribbean rock to samba and they were tight. Booties were shakin' all about as they jammed their way through the set. The band then left the stage to the three percussionists who spent 15 minutes doing a tambourine trio which seemed to be mostly improvised.

After a short break, Jorge came back out solo with accoustic guitar and did 30 minutes of Bowie covers along with a couple original ballads. He's a great guitarist, strong band leader and croons with a Lou Rawls-inspired whiskey-over-gravel-voice. He is strong.
