Dufus / John and Jehn / Spinmaster Plantpot @ Luminaire 20/11/06

Excellent surprise at the Luminaire last night! A great mix of genres but it's never been so explosive before!

The evening started with the Spinmaster Plantpot, the unique punky a capella ranter who just goes up on stage and gives an hilarious 10-15min performance singing about getting lost in his kitchen or about a bear crying at the Spinmaster's childhood memories...It's the second time I see him and I really want to see him again...his name needs to be spread more all over the indie scene!

Now the big surprise and the band to follow in 2007...

John and Jehn! JOHN AND JEHN!!!! They're mind blowing, and I mean it big time! If you're like me and big fans of the old stuff including Joy Division, the Clash,Velvet Underground, rge Gainsbourg, John Spencer Blues Explosion,Sonic Youth, and the not so old Blonde Redhead, Sloy (for those who know them), Yeah Yeah Yeahs and anything in this vibe...well take your shaker and mix it all and and then extract a new nectar of music that's never been heard before..yes..they are the best act I have seen at the Luminaire since I have started djing there!Distortion, jazzy piano, moog noises, velvet voices and a fantastic presence on stage which both conveys their passion for music and each other, some explosive Bonny and Clyde on stage. Their EP,if you're lucky enough to find it, is called 'L'amour ne nous dechirera pas'(love will not tear us apart). They're French and have just arrived in London and should be at the Luminaire again before the end of the year so WATCH THIS SPACE!I will be spreading the joy of their new gig as soon as I know when it is!

I'm not sure I want to tell you anything about Woog Riots...After John and Jehn, that was a bit awkward for anybody to be on stage and lo-fi pop was not the music for my ears. They were ok but I'm afraid nothing really original came out of it. Sorry...I will pass on that one!

Main act Dufus was a very good performance of Psychedelic Rock and it's been a while I have heard it well made. Great melodies and loads and loads of noises from all members of the band and a definite skill to interact with the audience and make everybody sing a fireman song! I will see them again and they're touring in the UK at the moment so try to have a pick if you can!
