My 18 month-old son, Axel, like all boys - loves to bang on things that make a lot of noise. Any chance he gets, you can (easily) find him smashing pots together, throwing hard objects at walls or just pounding his hands on the table. Anything to show the world he can make lot's of noise.
The Racontuers and Axel understand one another well. I can't say whether I fear or hope (or both) him being able to raise this behaviour to the sublime as Jack, Brendon and company have done. Last night's Brixton Academy show was one of the top rock shows I've ever witnessed, boys banging on - creating deafening and inspiring music. When I walked onto the street after the show, my ears still ringing, I could only compare the show to the Holloween night 1993 when I saw Nirvana play a 3,000 seat hall in Akron, Ohio with my friend Grant - just five months before Kurt Cobain's untimely death.
Last night's set was 90 minutes of a hard guitar screech-drive through "Broken Boy Soldier" as well as a cover of Gram Parson's "The Christian Life" and a house-shaking encore of "Kashmir." It is completely obvious to anyone who sees the The Raconteurs that this band is about fun and love of rock music, a love of banging away, nothing more nothing less. A true boy band but not the kind of boy band we speak of. As I left the show, thinking about Nirvana, Kurt and my friend Grant who would have loved The Racontuers but died too soon as well - I made a wish to one day bring Axel to a show like this one.
