Now this wasnt a gig that I was massively hyped about but I got roped into going along anyway..
When I last saw Madlib @ Fabric about 2 and a half years ago I was probably one of his biggest fans - he "was" the shit back then... since then I must say my enthusiasm has waned a bit - both his and the output of his Stones throw Label (which I would have considered number 1 in the world up until a couple of years ago) has started to bore me... Quality control has gone missing and the excitement has gone for me...
I suspected that most other fans may feel the same so I was very suprised to hear that KOKO was sold out for this one.... for a Hip Hop gig - this is a big venue. We went for some beers beforehand and got there late-ish..... the place was wall to wall packed which was annoying...
Now in KOKO you cant see unless you are right in the midst so to see anything I had to wade into the pit and it was ugly in there...
A slight degression: The music that Madlib and the Stones throw label make is classed by the media as "back packer hip hop" which basically means that it attracts a "back packer" crowd.. So this basically means white students in their late teens and early twenties getting rowdy, smoking weed and trying to look cool, dancing and shouting to anything that seems appropriate...
So that's who I was in the pit with.... - which is fine but when I'm on a school night and I can't really see any thing or hear anything this lot kind of do my head in some what....
I didnt stick around for that much - Madlib dragged a few guests up - they did stuff etc...
he finished the show with a 20 minute drum solo..... this was a low ebb - the back packers loved it...
I left early.
As I left I bumped into a kid I grew up with and we caught up. Highlight of the night...
