Radio Birdman - Dirty Water Club - 13th September, 2006

Radio Birdman
Dirty Water Club, Tufnell Park
Wednesday September 13, 2006 - 10:30pm

After a two year absence from London, Wednesday the 13th of July saw the return of Radio Birdman to London's "Dirty Water Club" in Tufnell Park. Although they were there in part to promote their first new album in 25 years, Zeno Beach, only about half the set was from that album with the remainder made up of what the crowd was really there to see... The old stuff!

The 70's rockers hit the stage somewhat awkwardly at first. They soon all found their rhythm and front man Rob Younger was jiving, or more appropriately "stage convulsing" Iggy Pop style in no time. Admittedly, this is something that only looks natural attempted by rockers of that generation and luckily the crowd was able to appreciate that and the crowd quickly followed suit by embracing what they were witnessing.

The Birdman played a good selection of their classics including Murder City Nights, Smith & Wesson Blues, Hanging On, Hand Of Law, Burn My Eye, Anglo Girl Desire, Non-Stop Girls and I-94. Amongst their newer tracks were We've Come So Far, Subterfuge, Locked Up, Hungry Cannibals and of course the title track to their latest album, Zeno Beach.

Despite a song writing gap of 25 years, the set was less eclectic than may have been expected. In fact, to the un-initiated, this divide may have even been un-noticeable. They sounded similar, their energy was as high and the only noticeable aspect, albeit hardly, was the raw passion; Perhaps we could feel they had a greater love and a bit more punk in the old stuff... Or perhaps, it was just us?

Anyway, although back when their sounds were new and they were not as internationally recognisable as their fellow Aussie punk rockers of the day The Saints, Radio Birdman have left a greater influence on the Australian music scene which is still felt today. They also proved they can still rock it and their show was as high energy today as it was any other day. Bring on the Birdman!
