I wasn't expecting to go to the Wireless Festival until Sofia told me she was interested in seeing DM. We hadn't been to a concert together in a while and I hadn't seen Depeche Mode since '90-91 (Violator Tour). We came out later in the day, after the England match, and caught most of Goldfrapp's set - great as always.
We walked into the MySpace tent and caught the end of Lorraine's set. The Norwegian trio does a good job carrying the mantle for '80-90's electronic, dance, club music. Vocalist Ole Gunnar Gundersen tries too hard to sound like Bernard Sumner at times but all can be forgiven when the show comes off well.
Depeche Mode played a nearly flawless set for 1:20 that was eminently enjoyable. They played a variety of very old, old and new tracks which appealed to the wide age range in the crowd. Stripped and Never Let Me Down Again warmed up a generally passive crowd, then the hits from Violator, Personal Jesus and Enjoy The Silence, took the crowd up a few notches and they closed strong with Behind the Wheel. Again, a very strong perfomance.
Sights at the show:
1. a sligtly overweight man in his thirtes, top off, having a religious conversion during Stripped.
2. several occurances of nearly-non-penetrative sex on the dirt in Hyde Park.
3. a man desparately trying to snuff out his mini grill while the police stood over him without humour.
